Toilet Training at 3 Years Old
Potty training can take different amounts of time for every child. Since every child is different, there is no quick answer on how to get a child to toilet train. However, there are some definite tips and tricks that can help with the potty training and hopefully get the child to want to use the toilet regularly and without too many accidents or incidents.
When potty training a 3 year old, look for the following signs of readiness to start toilet training.
- They are interested in what mommy, daddy or siblings are doing in the bathroom.
- They can pull their pants up and down themselves.
- They are uncomfortable when wearing a diaper and they go in the diaper.
- They are asking questions about the potty and the bathroom.
- Bowel movements are regular and they do not happen at night either.
- Their diaper stays dry for 2 hours or more, especially after napping.
- They can fully communicate their needs to the parent.
When the potty training begins, keep these tips in mind.
- If the child is not already use to the toilet and being around the toilet, than start with having them come to the bathroom with you. Get them used to being around the potty. This works with potty training boys and girls. If they already have a potty seat, have them sit on the seat as well, even if they do not have to go to get used to it and the time when using the potty should happen. Have them stay with you while you sit, so they can develop a connection between the two concepts of going and using the potty to do it.
- Make sure to watch for the signs that they need to use the potty. Watch their behavior to see if they are uncomfortable, straining in any way to poop if they are not making it to the potty at these times as well as looking like they may be holding "it" and trying not to pee. When you notice these times, immediately get them to the potty to go. This should help create the repetition that is needed for them to know to go when they are having those feelings and to use the potty. Occasionally, this may be enough after three or four times of this happening, but every child is different and it may take a little longer for some children.
- Do not forget to have them use the potty before bed as well. Take them to the toilet and have them go before bed. Also, keep in mind that when they get up in the morning to take them to potty immediately as well.
Potty training can be a scary time for children and having patience during the process will help as well. Making sure to give a lot of praise when they succeed is helpful too. Also, make sure there are no punishments for accidents either.
